The vegetable oil is obtained by pressing the seeds of the Castor plant (Ricinus communis), and used as an emulsifying agent to bind the ingredients in my products together smoothly. It also acts as a protective barrier shielding your skin against harsh environmental conditions.
Cocoa butter is high in fatty acids, which is why it's often touted for its ability to hydrate and nourish the skin and improve elasticity. The fat in cocoa butter forms a protective barrier over skin to hold in moisture. Cocoa butter is also rich in natural plant compounds called phytochemicals.
Derived from — you guessed it — the flesh of coconuts. This oil is also easily absorbed into the skin because of its smaller fat molecules, making it an excellent skin and scalp moisturizer. It protects the skin and has many antioxidants that make it ideal for healing the skin. In addition, the antimicrobial properties balance out the candida or fungal sources that can cause many skin conditions.
Olives are a type of fruit called a drupe which is basically a type of fleshy fruit that has one hard pit/seed at the center. First, the olives are crushed and ground into a paste. Then, the oil is separated from the paste by various methods. The first oil that comes from the very first crush is the “virgin” olive oil. The paste that is left behind after the first extraction is called “pomace.” The pomace contains the ground skins, pits, flesh, and a little bit of oil. Chemical extraction is used to get the last bit of oil out of the pomace. We use both in our soaps depending on what color we want the end result to be. Olive oil soap helps to moisturize your dry skin and give it a healthy, vibrant glow. The natural oils in this soap also leaves your skin feeling smooth and soft. This is because olive oil has a natural ability to hold in moisture which can help with dry, cracked or chapped skin.
Mango butter is obtained from the kernels of the mango tree. It possesses a high content of stearic acid which makes it moisturizing without being greasy. Mango butter is known to be rich in antioxidants that can be used to soften, smooth and moisturize dry rough skin. It’s natural rich emollient properties may help to treat burns, stretch marks, scar reduction, aid wound healing and skin regeneration and smoothing of wrinkles.
It’s extracted from the neem tree which grows throughout the Indian sub-continent as a native species. Oils extracted from both the leaves and the seeds of the neem tree help soothe the symptoms of eczema. They’re rich in compounds such as Nimbidin, Nimbin, and Quercetin that work as natural anti-inflammatories and anti-histamines. These help to reduce redness, swelling, and itching.
Palm oil comes from the flreshy fruit of Oil palms known as Elaesis guineensis tree. If you have dry skin, palm oil is a great way to hydrate, moisturize and protect. The oil protects against the temperature and dryness of the air around you to keep your skin fresh. It also helps as an anti-aging supplement maintaining its elasticity.
Rice Bran Oil, also called Rice Bran Extract, is derived from the “Bran” layer of a grain of Rice. Bran is hard, brown, and high in oil content. Rice Bran Oil is known for its ability to cleanse, soften, moisturize, soothe, nourish, and smooth the skin. It slows the look of aging and brightens the complexion. Its often used as an alternative for those who have allergies to coconut oil.
Shea butter comes from the Shea fruit that grows naturally in parts of Africa. Fruit that’s left on the tree eventually falls and animals eat it, leaving the pit and its nut inside for Shea butter making. Collected pits are dried in the hot sun. Once dry, the pits are cracked and the nut inside is harvested. Shea butter is loaded with vitamins A and E, minerals, and essential fatty acids that give it the ability to soothe, hydrate and balance your beautiful skin. Shea butter has been used for centuries to help reduce signs of wrinkles.
This oil is chock full of good things like Vitamins A, B, D and E and is super high in Oleic acid which makes it moisturising and conditioning. Suitable for all skin types, this oil is especially helpful in repairing dry, weather damaged skin.
When used in soap making, Sweet Almond oil produces a rich conditioning lather. High in Vitamins E, A and D as well as Oleic and Linoleic fatty acids. This oil is perfect for soothing dry, flaky and irritated skin. It is said to be beneficial for skin ailments like rashes, psoriasis and eczema.
Additives
Activated charcoal soap is made by processing a high-carbon material at a high temperature and then “activating” it with hot air or steam. Its large surface area allows it to absorb toxins, which is why activated charcoal in soap theoretically binds to dirt and oil on the skin and helps clear out pores.
A member of the mint family, Bee balm is a natural antiseptic and applied topically, can help with bee stings, rashes, and minor wounds. Bee Balm is naturally antimicrobial. Externally, it’s used to treat scrapes, stings and rashes.
This sweetly fragrant wax (cera alba) secreted by honeybees to build their hives has been prized throughout human history as a lubricant, cosmetic, and moisture barrier. Modern studies have found beeswax more effective at protecting the skin than the more common commercial mineral oil- and petroleum jelly (Vaseline)-based creams, lotions and lip balms.
This highly absorbent substance (chemically, aluminum phyllosilicate consisting mostly of montmorillonite) is, in plain English, aged and compressed volcanic ash. It works like a sponge on your skin absorbing dirt and oil. Used as a paste it is said to be especially calming to skin itching from exzema, psoriasis, chickenpox and other skin ailments. The antibacterial and anti=inflammatory properties may help your skin heal.
Fucus Vesiculosus, also known as Bladder Wrack or rockweed, is found in the intertidal to shallow subtidal marine environments of the North Atlantic and Pacific Ocean . It is rich in vitamins, contains fucoidan, and alginic acidic. This seaweed helps with deep cleansing and reducing the appearance of oil.
While there are many types of seaweed around British Columbia, one of the most noticeable is bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana). Kelp in soap helps unclog pores and improves blood circulation; two things that help reduce and prevent acne. While it does a great job exfoliating, kelp soap is not harsh on the skin like many exfoliators.
This common flower (Calendula officinalis), also called pot marigold, has a long history of use as a wound-healing and skin-soothing botanical due to its anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties.
Chlorella is a tiny, single-celled algae that grows in mineral-rich pools under direct sunlight for rapid production. These growing conditions give chlorella a higher chlorophyll content, which gives plants, and chlorella, their green color. The deep green of chlorella helps to show that this algae is one of the most concentrated sources of chlorophyll known. It is commonly used in soap making as a natural colorant.
Comfrey is a powerful wound healer thanks to its allantoin, saponins, polysaccharides, and other natural plant chemicals. It has the ability to treat bruises, sprains, pulled muscles, and other tissue damage.

Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulfate, is a chemical compound made up of magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen. Most of the reported benefits of Epsom salt are attributed to its magnesium, a mineral that a lot of people do not get enought of. Epsom salt is an ingredient used in a soak to treat minor aches and pains, soothing tired muscles and easing stress.
Douglas fir was one of the most used medicinal plants by West Coast First Nations, using the resin as an antiseptic for burns, sores and wounds. The sap has both antiseptic and analgesic properties making it perfect for a topical salve.
French Green Clay is a natural exfoliant that gently removes dead skin cells from the skin's outer surface. It helps to naturally exfoliate the dry skin layer and increase circulation, leaving your skin looking and feeling soft and moisturized. It is also used as a colorant in soaps.
Grapefruit seed extract also known as citrus seed extract, is a liquid extract derived from the seeds, pulp, and white membranes of grapefruit. It is prepared by grinding the grapefruit seed and juiceless pulp, then mixing with glycerin. It is used in soaps as an antioxident.
Honey is a natural humectant, which means it absorbs moisture from the air. Humectants are great for the skin, as they can help the skin retain moisture. Honey also contains antioxidants and natural sugars which can increase the lather of cold process soap. Honey is extremely moisturizing giving the skin a natural glow and healthy 'look'.
Indigofera tinctoria has been used for thousands of years to naturally dye cloth and fibers blue. Indigo is a perennial broadleaf evergreen that can grow six feet (2 m) tall, in the right place, and with the right care. It has beautiful pink flowers and is commonly used as a colorant in soaps.
The word lavender comes from the Latin root “lavare,” which literally means “to wash". People usually associate lavender with two specific traits: its fragrance and its color. The lavender flower and the oil derived from it have long histories in herbal medicine. Lavender essential oil used in soap will gently cleanse the skin without stripping it of moisture, allowing its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties to combat pimples and skin irritation. These properties also make lavender soap useful in treating skin infections, scabies, and eczema.

Sodium Hydroxide, also known as caustic soda or lye is used in making cold processed soaps. A lye solution combined with oil or fat cause a chemical reaction known as saponification (sapo is Latin for soap). This reaction breaks down the fats or oils into fatty acid chains and the lye mixture is neutralized in the process. Eucalyptus globulus tree native to China. Its sweet menthol aroma with a subtle note of pine is distinctive, and its analgesic, calming and anti-hypertensive properties are widely valued. The leaves have many benefits which include decreasing pain, promoting relaxation and relieving cold symptoms.
Named from the Latin lavare, “to wash,” lavender is native to the Mediterranean (most famously southern France) and has been used around the world for centuries in fragrances and skin care. It is a highly effective germicide used against E. coli and other pathogens in hand sanitizer and has many other uses in modern medicine.
